A Call to Hope.... a Quasi-Bilingual Post!

Remember how St. Thomas Aquinas said, the Little Guy is important too....?

“It is God's will that inferior beings should be helped by all those that are above them, wherefore we ought to pray not only to the higher but also to the lower saints; else we should have to implore the mercy of God alone. Nevertheless it happens sometime that prayers addressed to a saint of lower degree are more efficacious, either because he is implored with greater devotion, or because God wishes to make known his sanctity.” (S Th II II, q.83, art. 11)

Well, this is a post about "the Little Guy", Servant of God, Cardinal Thuận, on the 13th Anniversary of his death.

"A straight line consists of millions of little points". Likewise, a lifetime consists of millions of seconds and minutes joined together. If every single point along the line is rightly set, the line will be straight. If every minute of a life is good, that life will be holy. The Road of Hope is paved with small acts of hope along life’s way. A life of hope is born of every minute of hope in that lifetime." (RH978)

 “Chấm này nối tiếp chấm kia, ngàn vạn chấm thành một đường dài. Phút này nối tiếp phút kia, muôn triệu phút thành một đời sống. Chấm mỗi chấm cho đúng, đường sẽ đẹp. Sống mỗi phút cho tốt, đời sẽ thánh. Đường hy vọng do mỗi chấm hy vọng. Đời hy vọng do mỗi phút hy vọng.” (DHV978)

Servant of God, François-Xavier Cardinal Nguyễn Văn Thuận

François-Xavier Nguyễn Văn Thuận was born on April 17, 1928 in the central part of Vietnam, a suburb of Hue. He was the eldest of 8 children.

Văn Thuận was born into a family with a long Catholic tradition, his relatives were among the martyrs since 1698.

He was ordained priest on June 11, 1953 and was named bishop of Nha Trang (in central Vietnam) in 1968 at the age of thirty-eight. He chose as his episcopal motto, Gaudium et Spes and his entire life remained full of hope. Even now from what he suffered, he speaks to us of hope. 

Then he was named Coadjutor Archbishop of Saigon by Pope Paul VI in April 1975 (the capital of South Vietnam).  Deemed to be a political move by the Vatican, the communists arrested him on August 15th. First he was placed under house arrest, until March 18th 1976. He spent 13 years in prison.

"I spent nine years in solitary confinement and during that time I said Mass every day at three o’clock, the hour of Jesus death on the cross. I was all alone and could sing and chant whatever I wished, in Latin, in French and Vietnamese. I always carried with me the same tiny bag containing Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, "You in me and me in you".

They were the most beautiful Masses of my life. From 9 to 10 PM during the hour of adoration, I sang Lauda Sion, Miserere, Te Deum. In spite of the fact that the loudspeakers continued to bark from 5 AM to 11:30PM, every single day, I felt a singular peace of mind and heart and joy in the company of Jesus and Mary. I sang the Salve Regina and the Salve Mater and became one with the universal Church. I could see from my cell the entire Church, without boundaries, and in the rage of criticism and accusation against the Church, I sang "Tu es Petrus - You are Peter and upon this rock I shall build my Church" The presence of Jesus in the Eucharist consoles and unites us, vivifies and transforms us like the pilgrims on the road to Emmaus.

You believe in one power: the Blessed Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Our Lord which make you live. "I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). As the manna fed the Israelites on their way to the Promised Land, so will the Blessed Eucharist nourish you as you travel on the Road of Hope."

“Trong tù cha có dâng lễ được không?” đó là câu hỏi mà bao nhiêu lần nhiều người đã hỏi tôi. Và thực sự họ có lý, vì Thánh Thể là kinh nguyện đẹp nhất, là đỉnh cao của cuộc đời Chúa Giêsu. Mỗi khi tôi trả lời “có”, thì tôi đã biết ngay câu hỏi tiếp sau: “Làm sao cha kiếm ra rượu lễ, bánh lễ?” Lúc tôi bị bắt, tôi phải đi ngay và đi tay không. Hôm sau tôi được phép viết về nhà để xin đồ cần dùng nhất như áo quần, kem đánh răng, v.v... Hàng đầu tiên, tôi viết: “Xin gửi cho tôi ít rượu thuốc trị bịnh đường ruột”. Bên ngoài, giáo dân hiểu ngay. Hôm sau, ông trưởng ban chấp pháp cầm đến một ve nhỏ bên ngoài có dán giấy đề chữ “thuốc trị bịnh đường ruột” và bánh lễ xé nhỏ bỏ trong một cái lọ chống ẩm, ông ta hỏi: - Oâng có bị bịnh đường ruột không? - Có. - Đây là thuốc bên ngoài gửi vào cho ông! Không bao giờ tôi vui bằng hôm đó: từ đấy mỗi ngày với ba giọt rượu và một giọt nước trong lòng bàn tay, tôi dâng thánh lễ.

From his book 5 Loaves and 2 Fish, he relates this story:
“It was very hard for my guards to understand when I spoke about loving our enemies, reconciliation and forgiveness.
"Do you really love us?"
"Yes, I really love you."
"Even when we cause you pain? When you suffer because you’re in prison without trial?"
"Look at all the years we’ve spent together. Of course, I love you!" "And when you get out, will you tell your people to find us and beat us and hurt our families?"
"I’ll continue to love you even if you wish to kill me" "But why?"
"Because Jesus taught us to love always; if we don’t, we are no longer worthy to be called Christians."

Điều khó hiểu nhất đối với chiến sĩ gác tù, là thái độ tha thứ yêu thương địch thù của
mình. Có hôm mấy anh gác hỏi tôi:
- Oâng có thương chúng tôi không?
- Có chứ, tôi yêu thương các anh cách thành thực, không có gì là khách sáo đâu!
- Kể cả khi người ta giam ông, mất tự do, năm này sang năm khác? Không xét xử gì cả?
- Anh nghĩ lại bao nhiêu năm ở với nhau. Tôi làm sao giấu được. Tôi thực sự yêu
thương các anh.
- Chừng nào được tự do anh có sai giáo dân của anh trả thù không?
- Không, tôi vẫn tiếp tục yêu thương, dù các anh có muốn giết tôi.
- Nhưng tại sao lại yêu kẻ thù hại anh?
- Vì Chúa Giêsu đã dạy tôi yêu thương; nếu tôi không tuân giữ, tôi không đáng gọi là
Kitô hữu nữa.

He was released on November 21st, 1988. Then in 1991, he was exiled from Vietnam and lived in Rome, being made Vice President and then President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.  He passed away on September 16th 2002.

Prayer for the Beatification of Cardinal Francis Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan

O mighty and eternal God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit
I offer thanks for giving to the Church
the heroic testimony
of Cardinal Francis Xavier Nguyên Van Thuân.
The suffering he experienced in prison,
which he united with the crucified Christ
and commended to the maternal protection of Mary,
is for the Church and the world
a shining witness of unity and forgiveness,
and of justice and peace.
His loving person and his Episcopal ministry
radiate the light of faith,
the enthusiasm of hope and the warmth of love.
Now, my Lord,
through his intercession
and according to your will,
grant me the grace I am imploring
in the hope that he will soon be elevated
to the honour of sainthood.
Amen.

Kinh nghiệm khổ đau trong cảnh ngục tù, 
được Ngài sống liên kết với Chúa Kitô chịu đóng đinh,
và dưới bóng che chở hiền mẫu của Mẹ Maria,
đã rèn luyện Ngài lên một chứng nhân sáng ngời
cho Hội Thánh và toàn thế giới, về sự hiệp nhất và
tha thứ, cũng như về công lý và hòa bình.
Con người dễ thương mến cùng với sứ vụ mục tử
giám mục của Ngài tỏa chiếu rạng ngời ánh sáng
của đức tin, nhiệt tâm của niềm hy vọng và
sức nồng ấm của đức ái. 
Giờ đây, nhờ lời bầu cử của Ngài theo Thánh ý Chúa.
Xin Chúa ban cho con được ơn đang khẩn cầu,
với niềm hy vọng thấy Ngài sớm được vinh hiển
trên bàn thờ. Amen.
