To the Cloistered
This poem describing the beauty of a life lived for God was published in the Rosary Pilgrim in 1926.
TO THE CLOISTERED
Regina R. Colgan
The white-robed nuns of Dominic
Within their cloistered cell,
Kneel low in adoration,
As their rosaries they tell.
The “Dove of Peace” on them descends,
So free from earthly care,
Christ’s loving Spirit guides them,
These brides of His, so fair.
The busy worldly throng moves on,
Each for his own affair,
But few are those who pause to think
Of silent nuns at prayer.
Of nuns who left their loved ones
For the cloister far away,
To pray for poor humanity
Borne on the sea, To-day.
Falls twilight’s purple curtain—
The Angelus doth peal—
While in the chapel lovingly
At prayer the nuns still kneel.
They plead to God for sinners—
For priests—for millionaires—
For reckless youth—the faithful—
And does Christ hear their prayers?
Ah, yes! the good God hears them,
Prayers of each saintly nun;
Who for the glory of His name
Doth earthly pleasures shun.
Dominic’s white-clad Daughters
To Him their lives have given,
The better part have chosen,
To win Him souls for heaven!
What can we say? It’s a joyful life!!
