Getting Ready for Holy Week
Yesterday marks five weeks since Ash Wednesday began the season of Lent, and already we are approaching Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. The sacristan has plenty to keep her busy to get ready for the upcoming liturgies. The candelabras she polished will be used for the altar of repose on Holy Thursday. On that day, Jesus said to his apostles: “I have earnestly desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer;” (Luke 22:15), and we too are earnestly eager to arrive at the liturgies of Holy Week, the celebration of the central mysteries of our redemption. And just as heaven comes after the sufferings of this life, so too Easter marks the end of the Lenten fast, and we’re not so much better than the Israelites who complained to Moses during the Exodus that they were “disgusted with this wretched food” - a reading that always comes up at Mass during this week of Lent and never fails to produce jokes at recreation!.
