100 Plus Years and Counting

October 2nd, feast of the Guardian Angels is our foundation day and this year we officially pass the centenary threshold and are into our second centenary! We remember with gratitude the sacrifices our founding sisters made as they came here from the Rosary Monastery in West Hoboken, (Union City) NJ. Like today it was a cold and rainy day.

For 20 years the community lived in cramped quarters in the house at 63 New England Ave. That house was torn down in the 60’s after serving as a guest house for many years.

The back of 63 New England Ave.

Recently, we found this color slide of the old house. The garage and gardens are now in its place. The stairs at the far left are still there, albeit, quite sunken in. It goes toward the orchard. Our Lady of Fatima is still there but now sheltered by huge pine trees. The wall, part of the original estate, is also there. For us younger sisters it hard to image how almost 40 nuns lived in this house. No wonder when they moved into the new monastery it seemed so spacious although it is much smaller than most of the European-style monasteries built at that time.

Below are two pages of the Chronicles of the Rosary Monastery in Union City recounting the departure of the foundresses.
