Independence Day
You may remember from previous posts that the three “Patriotic” holidays of Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day are celebrated by our community with picnics and play. This year the weather wasn’t great for picnics so instead we ate our meals in the air conditioned community room and enjoyed the fruit of Sr. Mary Martin’s grilling along with conversation. Our meals are ordinarily eaten in silence while listening to a taped lecture or one of the sisters reading from a book, so talking meals are a treat.
The sisters are free to recreate by themselves or with others during our morning and afternoon work times. Sr. Lucia Marie recently received a pickle ball set, so some of the younger sisters joined the novitiate in trying out the game. As you can tell from the pictures, a good time was had by all!
Every year on Independence Day evening recreation is spent singing patriotic songs together. Recreation ends with the singing of the National Anthem as two of the sisters hold up our American Flag.
After Compline sisters usually climb to the top roof to watch the firework displays, but this year fireworks were canceled because of Covid.
